Recipe: Making Buttermilk

Misc.
Dear Don, When I was a child, my grandmother used to make buttermilk. Or I guess I should say, she "kept" buttermilk going. She would mix powdered milk as the recipe called for to make 1 quart, and then to that she added 1 cup of her last "batch" of buttermilk. I assume you could do this with commercial buttermilk. She then covered it and let it sit on the cabinet overnight, then refrigerated it. They drank it with dinner, made "crumbled cornbread" with it and used it just like some people do with regular milk. I never liked ANY kind of buttermilk, but for some reason, the memory was so strong that when she died, one of the main things that I wanted was the "buttermilk" pitcher.

Anyway, I would try making 1 quart of powdered milk as the recipe states and adding 1 cup of commercial buttermilk. Mix very well and leave out overnight- covered. Refrigerate for several hours the next day and give it a try. Just remember to save a cup from your last "batch" for your new batch. Hope this works.
