Recipe: Merle's Mop Sauce and Barbecue Sauce (1980's)

Toppings - Sauces and Gravies
MERLE'S MOP SAUCE

"Use to baste any meat or poultry."

1 cup vinegar (cider or wine)
5 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2/3 cup salad oil
3 Tbsp butter
1 lemon, thinly sliced
2 to 3 cloves garlic, minced
3 Tbsp grated fresh ginger
2 Tbsp dry mustard

Put all ingredients into a saucepan and heat until the flavors are nicely blended.

VARIATION:

BARBECUE SAUCE:
With the addition of 1 cup of brown sugar and 1 1/2 cups of catsup, the Mop Sauce may be turned into a barbecue sauce to serve on the meat after it is cooked. Never baste anything you're barbecuing with a sauce that contains sugar or tomato. Both will burn and turn the meat black.
