BEWARE AND BE AWARE OF HIDDEN LACTOSE:
Source: How to Tolerate Lactose Intolerance: Recipes & A Guide for Eating Well Without Dairy Products

Reading labels on the food products you consume is the first line of defense in avoiding products that contain lactose. Don't be fooled into thinking that if it is not in the dairy section, it does not contain lactose.

Beware of ingredients that have words like:
whey, dry milk, solids, milk by-products, and curds. They most likely will contain lactose. Those ingredients can be found anywhere on the list on the package. Be aware of convenience foods and food products we all commonly use which may contain even small amounts of lactose:

Sandwich breads

Cereals, high protein and instant cereals Pancakes and waffles

Certain margarines

Instant breakfast mixes Some instant coffees

Cream cordials and liqueurs Cocoa mixes

Breaded frozen foods

Luncheon meats and hotdogs

French-fries and instant mashed potatoes Cream-style soups

Creamy salad dressings and dips Mayonnaise

Creamed vegetables Sherbet

"Store bought" cookies Sugar substitutes

Some nondairy/whipped creamers

Commercially prepared gravy

Canned and frozen fruit

Chewing gum

Candies

Caramels, fudge, and milk chocolate

Packaged cake and cookies mixes

Commercial pie crusts and pie fillings

Puddings and custards

Not all of these products have lactose, so reading the ingredient list is important.

PAREVE
To be absolutely, positively sure that the product does not contain lactose, look for the work "pareve" (pronounced parve) on the product package. It is a Yiddish word meaning that is was prepared without either meat or dairy product in accordance with Kosher laws. Look for this label U Pareve. The "U" means Kosher. However, not all Kosher foods are Pareve.
