Recipe(tried): Poor Man's Fruit Cake

POOR MAN'S FRUIT CAKE

Bring to boil, then simmer for 15 minutes--1 c. raisins, 3c. water, 2c. sugar, and 1/2 c. shortening. Add 1 pkg. currants after mixture is cooked. Cool to likewarm..

4 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. nutmeg
2 Tbs. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 tsp. soda
1 1/2 tsp. boiling water
2 eggs, beaten
1 c. chopped walnuts

Beat eggs well, then add the soda that has been dissolved in the boiling water. Fold in the sifted dry ingredients alternately with the cooked fruit mixture. Fold in walnuts.
Line 2 regular and 1 small loaf pans with waxed paper that has been oiled. Bake in 300 degree oven for about 1 1/2 hours. Place a pan of water on lower oven shelf while baking.
