Recipe: Savory Hamburger Supper with Pastry Topping (Gold Medal flour bag recipe, 1960's

SAVORY HAMBURGER SUPPER

Pastry topping (recipe follows)
1 lb. ground beef
1 large onion sliced (1 cup)
2 tbsp. hot fat
1 (20 oz.) can tomato juice or tomatoes (about 2 1/2 cups)
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
1/8 tsp. garlic salt
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

Heat oven to 425 degrees F.

Brown ground beef, and onion in fat.

Add rest of ingredients. Bring to boil. Pour into an oblong pan, 10x6x1 1/2-inch or 1 1/2 quart casserole. Lay Pastry Topping over hot filling. Turn edge under, seal. Make five slits near center.

Bake 30 to 35 minutes.

PASTRY TOPPING

1 1/2 cups sifted Gold Medal Flour
3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup shortening
3 tbsp. water

Mix flour and salt. Cut in shortening. Sprinkle with water; mix with fork. Press into smooth ball. Roll out 1-inch larger than top of pan or casserole.

Makes 6 to 8 servings
