Recipe(tried): Sticky Rice Is A Type Of Rice

Misc.

Hello Friend;
I went through this dilema when I started makeing sushi and it constantly called for "Sticky Rice". After much research I found that sticky rice is a type of rice used in the orient, usually reserved just for sushi.
I can find it easy enough here in the D.C. area, and you should too if you live near a big city or in an area that has an oriental market. Your looking for a small grained rice, and the biggest brand name I have seen across the country is "Calrose". It will state that it is THE rice for sushi.
One thing is for sure, you cant substitute long grain, or Uncle Bens, or any other type of rice for it, nothing cooks up like this rice. It cooks up very dense and WOW, it really is sticky as the dickens. If you have to handle it with your hands, just wet your hands with a little water and you can handle it pretty well.
Also, a note to this. If you are preparing the rice for sushi, it will call for a vinegar/sugar solution to be tossed with the cooked rice. If sushi is your intent, then you can probably find a book at a local book store that will explain it all to you, if not locally, check out books on the web.
Other than that, the bag or box of rice should have correct cooking directions for you. Incidently, I just thought of a commercial brand out on the market now called "Sushi Chef", they have a whole line of products, including "Sushi Rice", if this is available, this will be what you are looking for, and you can prepare it without a rice cooker from the directions on the package.
Hope this works for you. Good luck! ;-) Sayanora!
