SUNBELT BROWNIES
1 cup vegetable shortening
5 squares (1 ounce each) unsweetened chocolate
5 eggs, beaten
2 cups sugar
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, unsifted
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup finely crushed, salted pretzels
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
Melt shortening and chocolate squares in a large saucepan over low heat.
Combine eggs and sugar, mixing thoroughly. Stir a small amount of the warm chocolate mixture into the eggs and sugar to warm them. Add warmed mixture to remaining chocolate mixture, beating until smooth. Remove from heat.
Add remaining ingredients, mixing well. (Batter will be very stiff). Spread mixture in a well- greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking pan.
Bake at 350 degrees F for approximately 20 minutes. Cool in pan on wire rack. Cut into squares.
Makes 4 dozen (1 1/2 inch) squares
