TOM THUMB BARS
FOR THE CRUST:
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed, divided use
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup sifted flour
FOR THE TOPPING:
2 eggs, well beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 cups shredded coconut
1 cup chopped nuts
2 tbsp. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease a 12x8 or 11x7-inch pan.
TO MAKE THE CRUST:
Combine shortening, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and salt; cream well. Add flour and blend with fork. Spread in prepared pan.
Bake 15 minutes at 325 degrees F.
TO MAKE THE TOPPING:
Combine the remaining 1 cup brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla; beat until foamy. Add coconut, nuts, flour, baking powder, and salt; mix well. Spread on the baked mixture.
Return to oven and bake 25 minutes at 325 degrees F. When cool cut into bars.

This recipe doesn't include raisins - maybe that was your Mother's own variation.
