Recipe: Upside Down Apple Cake (1950)

UPSIDE DOWN APPLE CAKE

1/2 cup butter
1 cup light brown sugar
2 tablespoons light cream
2 cups sliced apples
1 1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Mix together butter, brown sugar and cream. Spread in an 8-inch square baking pan. Arrange sliced apples in pan.

Sift together flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt.

Cream shortening and sugar; beat in egg. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk and vanilla. Pour batter over apples.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 40 minutes. Serve with whipped cream or plain.
