ISO: Cheesecake Advice Please

Hello! I am making my first ever cheesecake tomarrow, to serve on Thanksgiving... I would really appreciate any of your tips, suggestions, and discoveries on how to make it a great cheesecake. ie: I have heard to place a pan of water in the oven to prevent a cracked top, and at the same time I have heard a cracked top is a way to tell doneness... HELP! This will be a chocolate hazelnut cheesecake, that I am trying).
