ISO: Freezing Casseroles question

Misc.
There are lots of great recipes for casseroles you can make ahead and freeze. I am a very novice cook so can someone please tell me, do you make it ahead and cook and then freeze it, or do you make it ahead and freeze it - then cook it when you defrost it? In particular I am looking at some easy macaroni casseroles the kids would like that I could make ahead...

Also, how long can these stay in the freezer?

Thanks!
Chris
