ISO: Glaze from Sugar, Water and I don't know what...

my mother used to make a black walnut cake when i was small that was so!!!!! good. but she does not remember how she made the glaze that went over it. it seems like it was made with granulated sugar, water and i don't remember what else. i'm fairly sure walnuts were in the cake and i think they were also in the glaze.
does anyone out there know a recipe for it? you don't know how much i would appreciate it.
