ISO: petit fours?

I'm wanting to make petit fours as a christmas gift for family but have never made them I want to make german chocolate,a white chocolate rasberry,and carmeal
can you make petit fours out of normal cakes
how do you make that hard topping? I pretty much need to know it all. !! thank you so much for any help anyone can give
