The white soup you are thinking of is likely mashed or pureed white beans that are garnished with fresh minced garlic. You can find this recipe and many more wonderful recipes in a cookbook called Traditional Ukrainian Cooking by Savella Stechishin.
This is a dish that is only served on Christmas Eve.

Thank you for the suggestion Vera. I found an index of the recipes in Savella's cookbook but other than the potato soup they don't look like they fit the description of the white soup. Would you be willing to share the recipe in it that you're referring to?
