ISO: subsitute ingredient for Black beans

Misc.

I am doing a project for school and its to cook something from Cuba that they eat during the christmas holiday and I chose to cook black beans and rice... I have never cooked anything really, especially anything cuban since i am mexican. Well to get to the point its a high school project and there is an ingredient that is sherry wine... i do not find anything wrong with putting this ingredient in but my spanish teacher thinks this is not appropriate. Is there something other than sherry wine that i can subsitute it without losing its flavor? I need an immediate response this project is due Friday December 17.
thats alot. Olivia
