Thanks to all of you for your suggestions - I did find a Florida Extension Service website, and was able to post an email to someone there - today, I got back an answer from someone there saying that the twig/branch and spider mites are two separate problems.

She states that the twig/branch die-back sounds like hibiscus canker, and the control is to cut back the entire tree and destroy all the diseased portions. (Which is kind of what I had in mind to do before we head north to Cape Cod in a month)

The spider mite is controlled by several applications of Ultra Fine Oil which can be purchased at any garden store or nursery.

We have always fertilized with the flowering shrub fertilizers according to the directions, and our other hibiscus in the yard are so far unaffected and look nice and green and healthy.
