1963 Jackie Kennedy set the style

 1963, Jackie Kennedy set the styles (that, of course, was the year JFK was assassinated). I was in high school at the time, but I remember her short A-line dresses and pillbox hats.

She set food fashions too, with her French chefs at the White House. Fancy food was classic French. (I remember going to French restaurants occasionally with my parents.)

Other than that, as others said, it was casseroles -- often made with cream of mushroom soup! I remember having a classmate over for dinner, one of my first cooking experiments, and I made a casserole with leftover cooked chicken, frozen mixed vegetable, and a can of cream soup. I served that over toast points, as though it were Chicken a la King!
