Anise and fennel are different!

Misc.

Anise and fennel are two different plants, but they're related (both members of
the parsley family). They both have licorice-tasting seeds and leaves which are
used as herbs. Anise is very common and grows wild. Fennel is similar but a
little different and is usually cultivated. It's the plant which also has a
"bulb" like lower stem which makes a delicious vegetable, either raw or cooked.
Grocers add to the confusion by labeling fennel bulbs as "anise." You can eat
the bulby part of fennel raw or treat it like leeks, sauteeing it as a side
dish, or make soup, or roast it with potatoes. Yum!
