Canning Questions - Help!

I've been thinking about trying out canning and bought some jars tonight. I have to say that I'm a bit apprehensive about doing this, the thought of doing it wrong and somebody getting sick just terrifies me. Maybe you guys could help me out and answer a few questions? I really want to find out as much as I can about this before attempting it.

I've read about pressure canners - do I need one of these to do canning? I don't recall seeing them in the stores - where do you get them and how much do they cost?

I have a recipe for salsa that is uncooked. Can it be canned in the uncooked state or does it have to be heated and brought to a boil before being put in the jars?

And what about these recipes for cookie and brownie mixes in a jar - should the jars and rings be sterilized before you put the ingredients in?

Thanx for the help! I've looked around for that canning book I've seen mentioned but haven't found it yet, I need to get up to the bookstore this week and see what's there.
