Cast Iron Cleaning

Misc.

My Mom has an old cast iron skillet that I would like to burn off the burnt-on grease. Over the years, there has been a burnt-on grease buildup on the sides of the pan making it rough. The last time (10 years ago), she had it sandblasted off. I know my grandma's friend would put these skillets into a wood stove and burn that burnt-on stuff to ash and just brush it off, but I have no such stove. Can you use the self-cleaning oven self-cleaning selection to get the same effect without damaging the pan? (it's about 550 degrees, I think) I love cast iron. I never have to use anything more than a plastic scrubber to clean it.
