Gladys, have you heard of
Misc. Untours? They let you plan your own activities. (they word it as, the freedom of independent travel with the convenience and security of a guided tour)They have 2 & 4 week deals, you stay in an apartment in the area you are visiting. The price includes airfare, the apartment and a rental car(if needed where you are staying)They meet you at the airport, get you the car and either escort you or give you directions to your apartment. Then they are available by phone for help while you are there. There is usually one organized activity you can partake of if you like and a group orientation seession to help you decide what to do during your stay and how to do it. It's the perfect way for my husband and I to travel, as we are the type of travelers who don't want to be hurried along seeing a billion things in one day and not being able to linger where we want and skip what we want. Others of our friends feel they need to see everything there is to see or they miss out which I can understand but that isn't for me. We know San Diego so well that our yearly trips usually consist of just watching the waves, eating every dinner at World Famous Restaurant and checking once during the week what exhibits are at Balboa Park. The ocean is soooo soothing, and we are right on the beach in our motel, so it's in front of us all the time. There's a great little coffee place on the boardwalk where we sit early in the morning and watch "pets on parade" as we call it, when folks are allowed to have their dogs on the beach. Since we have to leave our sweet little Corgi with friends on these trips, it's nice to be able to speak canine for a few hours in the morning! Then we stroll down the boardwalk in search of breakfast, maybe at Kojak's a little Greek place that serves sliced tomatoes, scrambled eggs, fresh pita bread, bacon and that garlic/yogurt/cucumber sauce. Yum! Since we are not familiar with Tuscany, Untours seems to be the way to go to Italy and still allow us to travel they way we like to. This particular tour is designed for the cook and wine lover(that's me!), there is an activity where I will be learning to cook Tuscan food and my husband will join me in the evening to partake of my labors. (He says it kinda sounds like what we do at home, I cook, he eats!!)There is also a trip to a wine maker and olive oil producer. Blacksmithing is his hobby so he is excited about checking out the metal shops there. The apartment is on property that produces and sells wine, holy wine and eggs. Untours is so accomadating that we are flying into our departure city on the East coast and laying over for a couple days to explore there. Then, while in Tuscany we will take the high speed train into Venice for a day and spend the night. We could even take the train to Venice at the end of our stay, spend a few extra days and depart from there, they are very accomadating. We find the cost to be very reasonable. Oh, I can't wait!!
Their site is untours.com. I don't know if they have tours that leave from San Juan or not. I must be excited, look at the length of this post!! -Micha
