I don't know if all chinese restaurants make it from scratch ( more)
Misc.but Jade Garden is one of 5 family restaurants and the entire Wong-Hsu family makes it from scratch. The woodear is hard to find. I got mine at Safeway in the produce dept. We do have several Asian Markets in the Denver area. I guess next time I get there I will have to see if they have the soup already made up. I have never seen it. I have seen packets of dry seasoning mixes to use to make hot and sour soup, can't remember if it was Sunbird, Kikkoman or Dynasty. They all have packets of various Chinese mixes. Hope this is helpful to you.
