Otherwise, if you can make a glaze that soaks into the cake, and leave it to be absorbed, that might work, too.

Here is a lemon glaze I have used...you poke the cake all over, while the cake is still warm from the oven, and pour the glaze over, leaving it to be absorbed over a day or so. Then wrap the cakes as usual.
