Linda, The Answer is Yes...
Misc.My Dad WAS in the army medical corps (an orderly) BUT in WWI (he was 18). I KNOW what they called this in WWII, but in 1919, sergeants were GENTLEMEN!!! I never heard if that was where he was first served the dish. To this day, I keep a jar of chipped beef in the cupboard for one of those unexpected longings for "the old days"!
