Major Cause of Fruit Flies

I found out a couple of years ago that bananas were a major cause of fruit flies in kitchens. A produce expert told me that fruit flies lay eggs on banana stems during the importing and travel process. As soon as you bring your bananas home from the store wash them real well paying special attention to the stem area with Dawn dishwashing liquid and water.
Bananas last up to two weeks longer it you refrigerate them. That also puts a stop to fruit flies. Do not go by the looks of the banana peel when they have been stored in the fridge. The peel may be black but the banana inside is perfect.
