re: free and cheap yarn sources
Misc.I found a huge lot of brand new skeins of yarn and crochet threads in a variety of colors at a local thrift store.
In metropolitan areas, Big Lots sometimes has yarns for $1 a skein..
you might also consider online ordering from www.smileysyarns.com based out of New York, I once found Lion Brand chenille for .99 a skein and there were no limits on the amount you could order, I have recently seen it go onsale there for .77 a skein. You can find nice quality yarns for a steal there and shipping charges are not too expensive.
