I know what you mean, Sarah. I, too, prefer using shortening and flour. Done correctly, you still get the fancy design baked in, and the stuff seems fresher than the canned baker's product. I recently put oil in a spray bottle, but as soon as hubby gets back I dump it in the popcorn popper. If you don't want the butter-flavored oil spray, just go to the popcorn aisle and buy the butter-flavored oil there. I buy flavored oils now, and mix them 50/50 with canola or something. Works as well.
