Watermelon Baskets

Misc.
About the watermelon basket, a good friend of mine - who was the orginal non-cook used to make watermelon baskets as her contribution to potlucks. She didn't have a recipe. I know she never made melon balls- she would have thought you had lost your mind to spend all that time making balls- she just chunked up the melons and added whatever fruit was in season and wouldn't get mushy. I know she used several colors of melon, grapes -seedless and anything else that looked good and was in season. She would rub lemon juice on anything that might discolor like peaches. apple slices, nectarines etc. Since she enjoyed crafty type stuff carving the watermelon was't a big deal. Sometimes she had a handle, sometimes not. I alway suspected the carving didn't go as planned when there was no handle. Her comment about taking a watermelon basket to a potluck was that all you had to bring home was the spoon. I know she was picky about selecting the melon. It had to look and sound right to her. Good luck to you and your wedding.
