Recipe: Spiced Fried Apples (1964)

Side Dishes - Assorted
SPICED FRIED APPLES

1 1/2 pounds firm baking apples
4 tablespoons bacon (or ham fat or butter or margarine)
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Wash apples and slice lengthwise 1/2 inch thick. Cut cores from slices. Combine sugar and spices.

Heat fat or butter in a 9-inch skillet. Add enough apples at a time to cover bottom of pan. Sprinkle some of the sugar mixture over the apples. Cook uncovered, until tender, turning to cook both sides. Repeat until all apples are cooked.

Serve with eggs and bacon, or ham.

Makes 6 servings
