Recipe(tried): Baked Macaroni & Cheese

Misc.

Hi Debbie! I usually just make this without a recipe, so these amounts are approximate at best! This is how my Mom made it in the 50's, a real comfort food, my hubby just loves Mac & Cheese. I hope this is what you're looking for, you could substitute American cheese if you prefer.
BAKED MACARONI & CHEESE
3 c dry elbow macaroni
1/4 C margerine
1/4 C flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. white pepper
4 C milk
1 lb. shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 Tbsp. dry minced onion
crumb topping:
3 Tbsp. margerine
1 C fresh soft bread crumbs
1/2 tsp. paprika
Boil macaroni in salted water until just barely tender, drain & set aside. In medium saucepan melt margerine over low heat, stir in flour & cook, stirring one minute. slowly wisk in milk, cook & stir over medium heat until thickened. Stir in salt, pepper, onion,& shredded cheese, cook until cheese is melted, do not boil.
Mix cheese sauce into cooked macaroni & pour into a 9"x13" baking dish. Melt margerine, stir in bread crumbs & paprika. Top macaroni & cheese with crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes, until casserole is bubbly & crumbs are browned. You may sprinkle more shredded cheddar cheese on top the last 10 minutes of baking. Enjoy!
