If you like stuffed cabbage rolls, you will enjoy this dish which has much of the same delicious flavor but is easier and less time-consuming to prepare.
BEEF-CABBAGE BAKE
For 4 servings you will need:
1/2 cup uncooked rice
1 1/3 cups boiling water
Salt
1 medium onion, chopped
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
3/4 lb. ground beef
1 teaspoon worcestershire sause
1/2 teaspoon season salt
Black pepper
4 cups finely shredded cabbage(blanched in boiling water for 3 minutes)
1 (16 oz.) jar mild herb-style italian cooking sauce or spaghetti sause. You can add more sause if you'd like.
Cook rice in boiling water seasoned with salt for 25 minutes or until rice is tender. Drain if necessary.
In medium skillet, saute onion in the butter until tender.
Add ground beef and cook, breaking up with fork, until meat loses its red color.
Stir in worcestershire sause, seasoned salt and 1/8 teaspoon black pepper. Add rice and mix well.
Layer half the cabbage in a 2 qt. buttered casserole. Add beef mixture and press down. Add remaining cabbage. Sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper. Press down. Pour sauce over top.
Cover and bake at 350 for 1 hour.
For 2 servings: Half of the ingredients. Use 1 cup sause and 1 1/2 qt. casserole.
For 8 servings: Double the ingredients. Use a 3 qt. casserole.
