Recipe: Caramelized Gummy Worm Apples

Desserts - Fruit
CARAMELIZED WORM APPLES

8 Granny Smith Apples
1 pound gummy worms
8 popsicle sticks
15 Oreo cookies, finely ground
Carmel Dip (recipe follows)

Wash and completely dry apples. (Make sure apples are at room temperature.) Using a small knife, insert knife into random locations on the apple, turn knife to create a small hole in the apple. Save the apple pieces that come out of the hole.

Take a gummy worm and insert into the hole you just made in the apple. Using the apple pieces you saved, secure the worm in the hole. Insert the popsicle stick into the apple. (Insert into the stem end of the apple)

Once caramel dip has cooled to the correct temperature dip the apple, with the worms already inserted into the apples, directly into the caramel dip. Allow excess caramel to drip off.

Lightly dredge freshly dipped apple in ground up Oreo cookies. Set apples on parchment lined baking sheet that has been lightly sprayed with vegetable spray. Allow to cool.

CARAMEL DIP

4 cups sugar
1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
1 cup water
1/4 cup corn syrup
1 tbsp lemon juice
2 cups heavy (whipping) cream

Place the sugar, condensed milk, water, corn syrup, and lemon juice in a heavy bottomed sauce pan and bring to a boil. Continue cooking until it reaches a nice amber color (golden brown).

Remove from heat and add cream. Be careful whereas the cream may spatter and splash hot caramel sauce.

Return to heat and continue stirring mixture until the cream and sugar mixture combine together. Remove from heat and allow to cool to about a 115 degrees F.
