1 cup sugar
3 eggs, well beaten
1/3 cup brandy or bourbon
1 teaspoon ground mace
4 1/4 cups flour
Lettering Icing (recipe follows)

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, brandy, and mace. Blend well. Add flour and stir until batter is smooth. Chill in the refrigerator for several hours.
Roll part of the dough out on a lightly floured board until 1/8 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes with a cookie cutter.
Bake at 375 degrees until golden. Allow to cook on racks.

1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
1 to 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
