Cottage Cheese Swirls

1 packet dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
2 1/2 to 3 cups flour
1 cup creamed cottage cheese, sm. curd
1 sm. beaten egg
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup shortening

--FILLING:--

1/3 cup melted margarine
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup chopped walnuts or almonds
1 tsp. vanilla

Dissolve dry yeast in warm water. Combine 2 cups flour, sugar and salt. Then cut in shortening. Blend in cottage cheese, egg and yeast mixture. Knead in remaining flour. Cover and let rise, punch down and rise again. Roll dough to a 20 x 14 inch rectangle. Spread filling over. Roll 14 inch sides into meet in the middle. Cut into 1/2 inch slices, flipping one side over to form an "S". Place on greased pan and let rise. Can also make crescents, braid, twists or into a cake. Recipe can be doubled or tripled. Makes 2 dozen swirls. Bake at 375 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.
