Recipe: Dutch Apple Bran Cake (topped with apple slices, 1950's)

DUTCH APPLE BRAN CAKE

1 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup whole bran cereal
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
FOR THE TOPPING:
3 cups sliced apples
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 tsp. butter

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a 9x9-inch pan.

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Mix with whole bran cereal.

Cream shortening and sugar together. Add eggs; beat well. Add sifted ingredients alternately with milk, mixing after each addition. Spread in prepared pan. Arrange apples on top of batter, pressing slightly not batter.

Combine brown sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over apples. Dot with butter.

Bake at 375 degrees F for 35 minutes. Serve warm.
