I'm sure your Mom will love whatever you bake for her. One tip - watch the cookies baking closely for the last 5-10 minutes of the cooking time. The baking time for your cookies may vary from what's given in the recipe depending on thickness, oven temperature accuracy, etc. Because of their size, cookies tend to go from done to overdone very quickly.

If you don't want to roll the cookies out and cut them into shapes, you can either drop the dough onto cookie sheets or take a tablespoon at a time of dough and roll it into a ball and place on the cookie sheets. You may want to dip the bottom of a glass in sugar and press each one with it to flatten them slightly. One of your goals when making cookies is to get all of the cookies that are going to bake on the same cookie sheet about the same size/thickness so they all take about the same time to bake.

Regarding getting sugar to stick on the cookies, you can sprinkle on sugar (even colored sugar) before they bake (or roll the cookie dough balls in sugar before putting them on the sheet). Or you can sprinkle them with powdered sugar/confectioner's sugar after they bake. If you sprinkle it on when they're still warm it may melt into them a little so either wait until they cool or give them another dash of sugar after they cool.

Happy Holiday Baking!
