This has no celery but you could add some. This is a fantastic old recipe!
Recipe(tried): Grandma James' Fruit Chutney (old recipe)
From: Judy/Quebec 7-26-2002
Grandma died in 1954 but she had some wonderful recipes. My whole family (large one) make several batches every year and we give away many bottles. This is for those of you who I never gave the recipe to.
Grandma James' Chutney
12 Tomatoes, peeled, drained & chopped
2 large green peppers, chopped
1 cup onion, chopped (about 4)
3 tablespoons coarse salt
1 cup peaches, chopped (about 4)
1 cup pears, chopped (about 4)
1 cup apples, chopped (about 4)
1/2 cup pickling spices in a bag (I add 4-6 small round dried hot peppers to the bag)
3 cups white sugar
1 cup vinegar
Put everything but the sugar and vinegar in a large pot. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a slow boil and cook for about 2 hours until thick. Add the sugar and keep the slow boil for 1 hour. Add the vinegar and slow boil another 1/2 hour. Stir often. Bottle & seal. Store in refrigerator.
