Recipe(tried): Green tomatoe Relish - Paula Il.

Preserving - Pickles, Relishes
I suspect the relish you are talking about is green tomato relish. Here is the recipe I use:

Combine and soak in salt water for 3 hours.
2 quarts chopped green tomatoes
2 medium chopped onions
cayene or jalapeno peppers to taste
2 quarts water
1/2 cup salt

Drain and rinse well. In heavy saucepan, combine the seasonings below, bring to a boil, and boil 3 minutes. Add the onions, peppers, and tomatoes and simmer 10 minutes uncovered. Pack in 4 to 5 sterile pint jars and seal.

Seasoning mix:
1 1/2 cup white (5%acity) vinegar
1/2 cup water
2 cups sugar
1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
1 tbsp. mustard seed
1/2 tsp. tumeric
1/2tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. dry mustard

There is also a relish called chow-chow that is made in the south and eaten with purple hull peas. It contains cucumbers, cabbage, bell peppers also. I have a recipe for that also.
