Recipe: Homemade Hummus (blender or food processor)
Appetizers and SnacksYou need a food processor or blender for this recipe. All ingredients are added at the same time; blend until smooth.
HOMEMADE HUMMUS
BASIC INGREDIENTS:
1 (16 oz.) can CiCi beans (garbanzo beans; chickpeas), drained and rinsed (optional to rinse)
1 lemon, juiced (1/2 of a very large lemon) or all of one regular lemon
2 Tablespoons to 1/4 cup of Tahini* (ground sesame seed paste)
2 to 4 cloves peeled/mashed of fresh garlic (this would be to your taste; add a bit of salt to the garlic and mash before adding to the food processor.)
2 tablespoons of olive oil (some people do not add; so you might want to start out with just a small amount to see how you like this addition.)
1/4 cup plain yogurt or sour cream
About 1/4 teaspoon cumin powder or seed
Dash salt and ground black pepper
OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS:
1 pepperoncini pepper, stem removed.
3 to 4 leaves of fresh mint (omit cumin and coriander, if used)
Liquid hot sauce, just a couple of drops
1/4 teaspoon of coriander powder
Pulse or blend until smooth, if too thick add some water until desired consistency.
*Tahini can be found in the 'International or Middle Eastern' section of your grocery store. Ask the grocer to help you find it. If it is separated (like old-fashioned peanut butter) use a fork or spoon to reblend. Store in refrigerator after opening; keeps about 6 months so buy the smallest jar/container you can find.
