Recipe(tried): Ida add a little sugar

My mother inlaw taught me that recipe but she adds a teaspoon of sugar per quart to tenderize the kraut. When we have a kraut day she will press and push the cabbage into a wide mouth jar. The narrow jars are harder to pack the kraut into.
