Recipe: Lemon Spice Diamonds with Lemon Glaze (using oats, 1960's)

3/4 cup shortening
1 1/3 cups brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon shredded lemon peel
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup quick-cooking rolled oats, uncooked
1 cup chopped walnuts
Lemon Glaze (recipe follows)
In mixing bowl, cream shortening, brown sugar, and vanilla till light and fluffy. Add eggs, lemon peel, and juice; beat well.
Sift together flour, baking powder, and spices; add to creamed mixture. Stir in rolled oats and nuts. Spread in greased 13x9x2-inch baking pan.
Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees F) 20 to 25 minutes.
While warm, top with Lemon Glaze. Cool; cut in diamonds.
LEMON GLAZE
1 1/2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Milk (as needed)
Combine confectioners' sugar, lemon juice, and enough milk to make of glaze consistency.
