Recipe(tried): Lentil Whoppers
Misc.LENTIL WHOPPERS
Yield: 5 burgers
1 c lentils, 2 cups water, 1/2 t salt, 1/2 medium onion, chopped, dash or two of garlic powder, 1/4 c plain breadcrumbs, 1 egg white, breadcrumbs to coat, vegetable oil for frying.
Soak lentils in a bowl of cool water for thirty minutes. Drain and place in a pot with 2 cups water, salt and chopped onion. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to lowest setting and allow to simmer until lentils are tender, (about 40 min.) Note: Keep an eye on lentils because they may become too dry and burn. So add small amounts of water if needed during cooking until the lentils are nice and soft in texture. Lentil mix should NOT be watery. Should be like thick mud but not burned.
Remove from heat and spoon into a bowl and chill thoroughly. This makes for easier handling. When cooled, add the 1/4 c breadcrumbs and dash of garlic powder. Mix well and shape into burgers. Using hands, coat each burger with some egg white and then coat with some breadcrumbs. Hat about one inch oil in pan and fry burgers until golden brown on each side. Turn burgers GENTLY with a spatula to prevent breaking apart. Drain on paper and serve as you would regular burgers with all the trimmings. Enjoy!
