Recipe(tried): multi-layer cake

Desserts - Cakes

Karin, This recipes amounts to 10 layer, but maybe you could adapt it somehow to make 12. May by increasing the recipe by 1/4 (that is what I would do) and discarding any batter after the 12 th layer. It is time comsuming, but makes a beautiful and tasty cake.

1 (6oz) pkg semisweet chocolate morsels -- (1 cup) divided
1/2 cup butter -- softened
3/4 cup sugar -- divided
1 teaspoon vanilla
7 eggs -- separated
2/3 cup flour
3 tablespoons cornstarch

Sour Cream layer
2/3 cup sour cream
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Chocolate Sour Cream Frosting
2/3 cup semisweet chocolate morsels -- reserved from 6 oz
-- bag
3 tablespoons butter
1/3 cup sour cream
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
2 to 2-1/2 cup sifted confectioners' sugar

Fresh strawberries, halved -- garnish

Cake: Preheat broiler. Melt 1/3 cup morsels over hot (not boiling) water; cool. Beat together butter, 1/2 cup of the sugar and vanilla until fluffy. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each. Combine flour and cornstarch; stir into butter mixture. Stir melted morsels into half the batter; set both portions aside. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add the remaining 1/4 cup sugar; beat until stiff peaks form. Fold in half the beaten whites into each portion of batter ( batter may appear curdled). Spread scant 1/2 cup chocolate batter in bottom of a greased 9" springform pan. (Batter is very thin.) Place pan under broiler so that batter is 5" from heat. Broil 1 to 2 mins. or until baked. Spread scant 1/2 cup plain batter over chocolate layer. Broil 1 to 2 mins. Repeat, alternating chocolate and plain layers, making 10 layers in all. Spread top layer with Sour Cream Layer. Broil 1 min. Cool 15 mins. Remove sides of pan; cool completely. Frost sides of cake with 2/3 of the Chocolate Sour Cream Frosting. Arrange strawberries around edge of cake and in center. Pipe remaining Frosting between strawberries. Chill.

Sour Cream Layer: Combine sour cream, sugar, and lemon juice.

Chocolate Sour Cream Frosting: Combine over hot (not boiling) water, the 2/3 cup morsels and butter; stir until smooth. Transfer to small bowl; cool 10 min. Stir in sour cream and vanilla. Gradually add confectioners sugar, beating until frosting is smaooth and of spreadable consistency.
