Recipe: Old Fashioned Baked Beans (crock pot)

Side Dishes - Beans
OLD FASHIONED BAKED BEANS

1 pound dried pea (Navy) beans
1 pound smoked ham, bacon or salt pork, diced
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup dark corn syrup
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon basil
salt (to taste)

Soak beans in 6 cups of water overnight.

WHEN READY TO COOK:
Drain beans and stir in remaining ingredients. Pour into Crock-Pot.

Cover and cook on Low for 6 to 12 hours or on High for 3 to 4 hours.

Note: Beans must be softened completely before combining with sugar and/or acid foods, because these have a hardening effect on beans and will prevent softening.
