LOVE'S BARBECUE PIT BBQ BEANS
3 cans (1 pound each) pork n' beans
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons chili powder
1/4 cup dark molasses
1/2 cup Heinz chili sauce
2 tablespoons vinegar
Fried crumbled bacon, for topping
Combine all ingredients in bean pot or crockpot with lid, mix well.
Cover and bake at 400 degrees F for 1 hour for thin bean mixture, or 1 1/2 to 2 hours for thicker bean mixture.
Sprinkle with crumbled bacon bits to serve.
Serves 8
Note: To make this recipe more authentic, according to a
writer on the Uncle Phaedrus website, who was a pit master (the person that runs the BBQ pit) for Love's in Torrance, CA, in the mid-1970's, the follwing changes should be made to the above recipe: (He said he didn't remember the original recipe, but these changes made it being at Love's all over again after he tried it.)
Substitute some fried bacon for the bacon bits and add some of the bacon drippings. He also said he smoked the beans for four hours in a smoker.
Personally, If I didn't have a smoker, I would add a little
liquid smoke from the supermarket. I haven't tried this recipe yet.
