Science recipe(s) of the month

This issue, I've decided to print three recipes for slime. All of them
work and will make you enormously popular with kids. These recipes, or variations of them, can be found all over. They're fun
to play with, and they're nice little demonstrations of what some people call non-Newtonian fluids, which are basically fluids
that misbehave. All ingredients can be found at supermarkets, drugstores, or hardware stores, although you may have to look a
bit harder for guar gum (you can get 200g of guar from Capers for $2, so health or bulk food places might sell it).

The Gloopy Glopper Mix
Borax solution (1 T Borax* in 1000 ml warm water)
250 ml white glue**
Food colouring
Glycerine (optional)

*About Borax
you can buy it in the laundry detergent aisle of most grocery stores. It's actually a mineral called sodium tetraborate, and people often add it to their washing to make the
detergents work better. It's safe to handle, but do not eat it.
**About glue:
not all glues will work. Don't try to use yellow carpenter's glue. Home Handyman's HomeBond White Glue works, and you can buy it in bulk.

1.Dissolve the Borax in warm water, stirring vigorously until the Borax dissolves.
2.Put the white glue in a bowl. Blend in a little water (start with 1 tbs) to make the glue easier to stir. Add the food
colouring.
3.Pour Borax water (about100 ml at a time) into the glue, stirring vigorously as you do. Do not add too much Borax
solution at once - your slime will become more cheesy than slimy. The glue will start to clump and form a stringy mass.
Keep stirring, and add more Borax water if not all of it is clumping.
4.Once the clump is solid enough to pick up, begin kneading it until it is smooth. You may still need to add more Borax
solution if the slime is too sticky. Eventually, it should stick together more than it sticks to you.
5.You may want to rinse the mass in water to get rid of the unreacted Borax. Be warned that the slime will try to escape if
you do this.
6.If you like, add a drop of glycerine to make the slime smoother and to hold in the moisture.

This slime does a lot of the same things that Silly Putty does (as long as you keep it from drying out).

Guar Gum Slime
Borax solution (see above)
2.5 g of guar gum (4-5 ml)
500 ml water
Food colouring

1.Colour the water if you like.
2.In a bowl, slowly dissolve the guar gum in 500 ml water. To avoid lumps, sprinkle the guar gum on the surface of the
water a little at a time, stirring gently.
3.Add Borax solution (about 2-4 tbs), and stir. The mixture will get stringy; if you're brave, mix the slime ingredients
together with your hands. You should have a nice batch of slime in a minute or two, and, at some point, you should be
able to lift the slime out of the bowl. Keep it in a sealed container.

This one would look good with a few rubber worms in it.

Oobleck, Ooblick, Ick
Cornstarch (have 1-500g box on hand; it should be nearly full)
Cold water (about 125 ml)
Food colouring (optional)

1.Put water in a bowl. Add food colouring if you want.
2.Mix in about 1/2 box of cornstarch. Try to distribute the water evenly; it will be difficult to mix.
3.Add more water (1 tbs at a time) until the slime looks like a liquid in the bowl, forms a hard ball when you squeeze it,
and appears to melt when you stop squeezing.

This slime is not toxic, but it does rot.
