ISO: Choclate covered apples

Would any one have instructions or thought on how to do the caramel coated/chocolate covered apple. A local store in my area gets the BIG red apples in at Christmas time. I would love to do some to slice and put out on the dessert buffet. I would also like to make one for each gal as a small gift......put in a clear celo bag...... tie shut with gold wire ribbon and tie a Christmas ornie on it too. I have made them in the past using the block of caramel and rolling it out then covering the apple and then dipping in choc. I did not care for the caramel as it was hard to make nice cuts in the apple and keep the chocolate on. I was hoping to find a softer caramel. Did I see somewhere on here about caramel for diping and it was caramels unwrapped with some cream and maybe butter added? If you have any suggestions :) please direct me here :)
