ISO: chocolate cake with caramel icing

My father-in-law has requested chocolate cake with caramel icing for his birthday. He had it when he was a child in Oklahoma. I asked him to describe the icing and he said it was like a frosting and not a caramel sauce you put on icecream. And should I just make a chocolate box cake for the cake part? THANK YOU!!!
