ISO: How to select a good watermelon

Misc.
Hi Friends,
Does anyone know of a foolproof method for selecting a good watermelon?
I know you are supposed to knock on them and if they sound hollow they are supposedly ripe, but that method doesn't always work.
We bought one yesterday that is really overly ripe and not very eye appealing.
So, any ideas out there?
