Finally, the mystery solved!

Great! How did you ever track that one down? Pineapple buns, huh? Never heard that name here. Although bakeries here do sell something they call "melon pan" ("pan" being the Japanese word for bread): a largish round spongecake bun whose top is spinkled with sugar and scored in a sort of shell pattern that supposedly represents a melon. (Doesn't have melon inside, as one might think.)
